What's next for oddworld? JAW speaks

As seen on VG24/7:
http://www.vg247.com/2013/03/12/what...-water-speaks/

Not much we didn't know in there, but it has a nice optimistic vibe to it.

They talk a bit about the "what do you want to see next poll" that was on oddworld.com. I'm just disappointed they interpreted the option "Something new" from the poll as "not Fangus, not Squeek and not Hand of Odd". The poll wasn't very clear and this is probably why Squeek scored so low. I don't want to wait an other 10 years to see what Squeek is all about.

What do you guys think?

Wil 03-15-2013 04:19 AM

We've talked in the office about what "Something new" is likely to have meant to those that voted. I'm sure we concluded it had to mean 'not another remaster/remake'.

Nepsotic 03-15-2013 04:37 AM

I think if AO's getting a remake then AE deserves one too. It'd be nice to have the two most important games touched up ready for the next installment.

I'm glad to hear that. :)

Just curious, but what did you guys at JAW actually have in mind when putting "Something new" as option?

Nate 03-15-2013 05:34 AM

The poll wasn't on the JAW website. It was on the Oddworld website. So either Wil enjoys screwing with our heads or...

or...

Nope, I've got nothing.

:p

Wil 03-15-2013 05:42 AM

Screwing with your heads? What, you think we don't pay attention to the Oddworld website and can't have any discussion about its contents?

Xavier 03-15-2013 05:43 AM

So you are telling us that oddworld.com is not maintained by JAW but that OWI actually has some staff on its own?

Scrabaniac 03-15-2013 05:54 AM

"Darker in some places than the original"

The screwing with our heads was the implied denial that the poll had anything to do with JAW.

Wil 03-15-2013 07:06 PM

I was just making sure nobody thought Gravity Crash would be the next game from Oddworld Inhabitants.

100% Agreed. Abe's Exoddus needs the HD treatment. Once you've remade two of the finest games ever whilst getting the word out that Oddworld is back, then it would be a great time to make new Oddworld games.

I'm excited just thinking about it! :D

STM 03-16-2013 02:48 AM

I do think they should do something new before they consider another HD remake if they are considering one. When I voted for 'something new' I meant HoO, Squeek or Fangus or something we don't know about, basically I'm not fussed I just want to see something new. Oddworld hasn't done a completely new title since 2005 and would have thought it'd be a funny business plan just to churn out another remake after New 'N' Tasty. That's not to say I'm not really fucking excited for NnT, because I really fucking am!

Phylum 03-16-2013 03:05 AM

I agree with exactly what STM said. We need new stuff, before people think OW is out of new ideas.

Jbot123 03-16-2013 03:20 AM

Slave Circus and Faerietales sounded cool, I wished they were options.

Abe® 03-16-2013 07:03 PM

Yeah, I'd like to see something new too as I can play abe's exoddus right now if I wanted to so waiting all this time for a hd remake is not as exciting as a new game. What I mean is that the hd remake will bring new things such as hd textures and smooth camera scrolling and... yeah that's it. But making a new game always gives the chance of it being really successful.

Fred The Fuzzle 03-16-2013 11:26 PM

I don't think JAW is ready to tackle an altogether new game - at least not to the scale of HoO, Fangus or Squeak. I'm all for new content, but not at the expensive of quality.

I would like to see SligStorm come to fruition, it's new content, but in a more manageable scope.

Xavier 03-17-2013 01:06 AM

I'm sure JAW could do wonders with Fangus. They already have quite a lot of experience fiddling around with the Stranger engine so I think this should not be such a surprising move.

STM 03-17-2013 03:06 AM

Exactly, after all what use is a gaming company that can't make new games? I have full faith that they could pull off an entirely new game, preferably my choice would be Squeak just because it's the third game in the Quintology but as I said, I'm not fussed. I don't think a new game is going to be important to keep business coming in though.

Manco 03-17-2013 06:28 AM

If we assume unlimited resources then yeah JAW could do wonders on a new game.

Thing is a game on the scale of Fangus or Squeek would take a large amount of time and money to fully develop; two things a studio the size of JAW doesn’t have.

People seem to keep forgetting there’s a reason why they’re doing so many rereleases.

That's exactly my point. People seem to think JAW has tens of millions to invest and hundreds of employees to develop games. I genuinely do not want to see Squeak being made at the moment, it's simply too big a venture.

Well to be fair, we don't know anything about Squeek, that's why I said that and not Fangus, I was assuming it wasn't going to be quite as expansive as Fangus sounded...but then I'm not really basing this on anything because of my last point, it's just hunch I guess. =P

Fred The Fuzzle 03-17-2013 07:51 AM

Squeek, Fangus and HoO sound like massive undertakings to me, requiring mass amounts of money, time and creative diarrhea courtesy of Lorne.

Phylum 03-17-2013 10:32 PM

I would expect less from Fangus than I would the next Quintology installment.

Bullet Magnet 03-18-2013 06:41 AM

Obviously the next game will be a chaotic karting romp.

Abe a GoGo Kart anyone?

Xavier 03-22-2013 07:08 AM

More like Mudokons forced to compete to death in order to entertain the Khanzumers...

With this excuse you are good to do any kind of party game set on Oddworld.

creative diarrhea courtesy of Lorne.

Funny. That's the exact terminology I use to refer to Lorne's creativity.

Scrabaniac 03-22-2013 08:45 AM

Mudokons forced to compete for the entertainment of khanzumers? I smell the first annual Oddlympics coming up right here!

Wil 03-22-2013 08:48 AM

Oddlympics. That takes me back.
