yeah, it does sound a little cheesy. But its just in following from their previous titles.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

it sets them up for sequels as well

Not to mention it is so corny. What's next, "Return of Stranger"?
:
it sets them up for sequels as well
"Oddworld: Stranger II-The Son of Stranger's Return!"

I also feel uncomfortable with the name...but I will not let it lessen my enthusiasm.

Everyone need to stop criticizing the little things Oddworld dose and just let them do it. I can understand why you all don't like it (I liked "Oddworld: Stranger" aswell.) but in the end it's their decision. If it'll end up attracting new people then thats great and Im sure all of the long time fans won't just forget about getting the game just because of a little name change. Mabye the name will suite the game much better, just wait untill you play it.

I respect Oddworld's descision. I mean, they've been making this game for about three years, and care very much for it. So if they thought this title would make their game look bad, I don't think they'd do it. I mean, they know the game best. More than we do...we haven't even played it!

-oddguy
Exactly. It's OWI decision to change the name, and if they feel it's right to do, then we don't have any say in if it should be changed back or not. I'm perfectly fine with the name.

So we should all sit back, and delude ourselves that the game will be good, no matter what?

Like I've mentioned over and over again, I am generally impressed with the game, albeit I am still disapointed the game has gone semi-FPS. But there are always going to be things that urk me, and the new name is one of them. You shouldn't all act so offended. You're acting as if I had spit on you and danced on your grave.

I wouldn't criticize it if it didn't seem totally uncharacteristic of OWI. I can only think it's purely for marketing purposes, but it still detracts something from the overall feel, and loses a very cool design for a dragon in favor of a very boring look and cliched title. One can only hope the game itself hasn't had to sacrifice too much in the name of marketability. Other than that, the chicken people, the western style, the action and FPS element don't bother me.

Hmmm, I have mixed feelings about the idea. Clearly ‘Oddworld Stranger’ is better from an artistic/originality point of view, but ‘Stranger's Wrath’ might turn out to be much better for marketing. It could under the influence of pressure from EA that OWI changed the title, or just under advice. I personally would prefer to play Stranger, but I don't want that to deprive Oddworld of publicity and new fans. Not being released on PS2 will undoubtedly be a set back, especially after all the claims that it would appear on the Sony box.

I will change the title of this thread to distinguish it from the other one, though.
dont.....tell...me....it...isnt coming out for ps2.. ;~;

personally...I think it's just silly to fight over something like the name, any true oddworld fan will buy the game no matter what it's named and if it atracts more general audience, well..whatever works

Well, to me, the name of a Game is very important. OWI says that their new name portrays the feeling of the game... so does that mean Stranger is gonna run around throughout the whole game and be "wrathy?" If that's true, I don't know if i'd like to play as a character that's always pissed off.

I don't know how the new name would atract a larger audence either. Would you, not knowing anything about Stranger, just run to the store and buy a game called "Oddworld: Strangers Wrath?"

Not too sure if I would go an buy it, or even look closer at it. Typically, when 'wrath' is used in a video game, it's a sure sign that the game is really poor. 'Wrath of Cortex', for instance. Ugh, they did such a dismal job with the Crash Bandicoot franchise. Though I hear they actually spent effort in making Twinsanity, and it is quite good. And, 'twinsanity' is such a cool made-up name, indeed very creative.

Which is my biggest gripe with the new name. It seems like it was an afterthought.

I'm not going to sign a petition. Although I prefer the original name, I respect OWI's decision. I'm sure it's not something they just made overnight ... they would have researched, talked with EA, all kinds of possibilities.

Plus, true Oddworld fans are going to buy the game no matter what. If you're not going to buy the game based on a title change, are you really a true Oddworld fan? I think from a marketing standpoint, it would be more important to try and snag the generic gamer who is unfamilliar with the series.

If it was up to me I would of called it Oddworld: Strange Days with Stranger!

But thats just me and I respect the name Stranger's Wrath because one this game is a western and two Stranger is bad ass thus the name of the game suits him best. Unfortunately I am not really fond of the title eather but you can't tell a game by its title. Sorry folks this petition probaly won't work.

No, it was EA who said that.

Again, you can thank the publisher, Universal, for forcing the developer, Traveller's Tales, to produce the same regular linear gameplay. Early videos of WoC clearly showing a free-roaming world.

You don't have to take back saying you don't like the new title - you're utterly entitled to your opinion, no matter what. The more I hear the title, the less repulsed I feel. It is only the title, after all - still holding on to the hope of the dragon logo appearing.

If the game is a good game it will be a good game, if it is a bad game it will be a bad game. The name is not going to change the quality of the game in any way, shape, or form. What is wrong with you people!! Why start a petetion? Its their game, not yours. They can name it whatever they want.

Wow! It seems like the title has brought out the wrath in some of you! I do want to point out that the actual game is the same regardless of what the name is, so I hope that those of you who don't like the title (and YOU ARE entitled to that opinion!) will be just as excited about the game regardless of what it's called. Some cliche about not judging a book by its cover comes to mind.....

Without wanting to weigh in on this discussion, I think that the major theme of what people are saying is not that Oddworld fans will be turned off the game but rather that gamers who have never heard of OW before may not purchase it because the word "Wrath" (in some people's opinions) has some negative connotations. Thus providing a deep-seated irony if that name was indeed chosen for marketing purposes.

I think I can speak for all here on the forums when I say that we want this game to sell as well as possible and increase Oddworld's fanbase exponentially.

[look out Halo... Here comes Stranger]

I agree with you Alf mann. It doesn't matter what the title is, its the stuff inside which counts.

I say anyone who judges a game by its title should be smacked in the head. Because it is so unfortunate who say they are true fans and then turn around and hate the game or movie or story etc all because of a title or a minor tweek here and there. I mean please are you truely an OW fan if you do that? That drives me crazy sometimes.

I agree, but that's not a reason... I mean you should please everybody, or at least most people as possible, and people may not want to try to know more about a game they don't like the name...

lets say, here is an awesome game, but the name is BoogyWoogy will the average shopper stop and look at it?

In the new Gamestop preview, they said this:

:
Oddworld (the company) has since decided to rechristen its new baby as Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, first to avoid any pesky copyright conflicts, and more importantly to bring it in line with previous games' titles, such as Abe's Exoddus and Munch's Oddysee.
Sounds like a good explanation to me... And I shouldn't have judged the game by it's name, it'll still be the same game, right? I'm sorry Alf! Someone close this Petition Thread, it's not important anymore.

Thanks, Alf, for reminding everyone that while the title is important for marketing, it's the game that counts well and truely. I'm sure the greatness of Stranger's Wrath will sell the whale-loads of units through fantastic reviews and such.

Personally, I liked it better the way it was. I think the reason they did this was so that if they had sequels it could be Strangers ______. Like Oddysee changes to Exoddus with the sequel.

I would have to disagree because for one Stranger's Wrath makes a whole lot of sense because of the very nature of what he does for a liveing and two like I mentioned before he is a bad ass.

After viewing the Lorne Lanning video earlier today I am actually starting to like the title for personal reasons. There were some cool things I caught up on during my viewing of the Lorne Lanning video after viewing it like 4 times. The whole game itself has to attract non Oddworld fans aswell. I believe a title like Stranger's Wrath will be suitible to deliver that and make a bigger fan base. We will just have to see come late January.
