Johnny Eveson. He made these, which he put in here. Members told him to get in touch with JAW, so he did, or maybe JAW found him.

Either way, a few months later, he was designing Oddworld merchandise and marketing materials.

Lorne and Wil have both said the logo was created by a fan. I think I know which one. And rather than trying to nick his spot, it'd be politer to send him some gentle criticism and ask if he might have a go at improving it himself.

I think you’ve made a leap in logic there. It’s possible that Eveson designed the logo, but by my eye his design work generally makes use of bright, bold colors and has more tonal variation, which (as has been pointed out already) this logo doesn’t. If it is his work it’s one of his weaker designs.

A couple of other observations: JAW specifically named Eveson as the designer for the work he did for them, and if he had also designed the logo I think they would have specified this somewhere. He was also commissioned to to the NnT poster and the Soulstorm t shirt, whereas saying “designed by a fan” implies that the design was given to them pro bono rather than paid for.

Don't worry, I'm not trying to take his spot, I'm just trying to show what sam250 envisaged, basically. See how different colours work.

I, myself, don't have a problem with the current logo. I just like to design stuff. (Although, I think the colours, etc, seem more Oddworldish on my one, but that's just my opinion. It seems to take it more back to the original more.)

Really? Because I could have sworn the style was absolutely identical. Look at the Soulstorm Brew shirt: Low contrast, muted palette, retro aesthetic, squiggly font, Glukkon head graphic, clean vectors, lots of layers.

I'm fairly certain they have specified it. I'm confident it was Eveson, but feel free to go back through OWI announcements to find out where.

They’re superficially similar, but there’s various possible explanations for this:

Eveson designed them
The designer of the logo was inspired by Eveson’s designs (the logo wasn’t used until well after the Soulstorm shirt was shown off)
The logo was based off the retro, corporate styles of Glukkon marketing just the same as Eveson’s shirt design, and thus the two appear to be of a similar style

Flat, vector and retro designs are also very, very popular in the design community right now. And as for the colors, check again: they may look similar, but if you render in grayscale most of Eveson’s work shows off tonal variation that isn’t present in the NnT logo.

I was talking more about the Oddworld.com blog. JAW announces everything they possibly can through that, especially collaboration work with others. Eveson’s poster and his t shirt were both announced and Eveson explicitly named as the designer, but this isn’t true of the logo. Don’t you think they would announce the logo in a similar manner to Eveson’s other design commissions if he were the creator?

These games were never about following established conventions in many respects. Surely, then, the same ideology can apply to it's logo as much as any other aspect of it, you know? All the complaints seem to use other games as examples of how it "should" be done...well, these games never needed to look to copy other games' ideas before. Lorne sometimes refers to games as pieces of art. If all art conformed to stereotypes and didn't attempt to break the mould, this would be a dull world. It is, perhaps, a little avant-garde but I personally like the idea behind it, this symbol of the sort of tacky, corporate flourescent thing that a group of Glukkons might dream up to sell their product. We should all have faith and acknowledge the risks involved in the creative process. Besides, the game looks beautiful and the series is well respected, and no amount of logos can add or detract from that!

I still think it was pointed out somewhere, perhaps on the forums, but at any rate, absence of evidence ≠ evidence of absence.

I think it's pretty unlikely that JAW would hang prints of Eveson's fan poster around the office, adopt another piece of fan art as an official shirt design, comission him to redo one of the most famous props in AO, and then decide that he's just not good enough for the logo.

By your logic, shouldn't JAW have posted an announcement saying that the logo was designed by Whosit Whosisface? JAW are a small team with lots of work. Oversights will happen.

They did announce the logo, in a fashion, but they went down the route of intrigue rather than bombast.

Can we all talk about how this has been mocked up for a boxset that is re-hashing old material, yet it looks 10 times better and like 10 times more effort has gone into it than New 'n' Tasty's current logo? I'm no graphic designer so I don't know if it's simple in terms of it's production, however, I know I'd be quicker to grab that off the shelf than N'n'T if they were side by side.

This image is floating around various online Oddworld sources to promote a Thanksgiving competition... And whilst basic, I'd say it's also a better candidate for at least the beginnings of a logo than what we have at the minute, I hope it's not been made specifically for a competition.

The first image is just a recoloring of Raymond Swanland’s Oddboxx artwork with some altered text – there’s likely not much effort gone into it at all. The other graphic is an old piece of promo/concept art that’s just being reused now.

Besides, neither of these graphics would make a suitable logo. A logo has to be a little more flexible than that.

Hey now... I put a lot of effort into changing that text! You should have seen how enormous the resolution was, and I had to change it from scratch.
