Also I might add the American definition of sXe and what it means to be sXe is very different from the British version...
Hmm, enlighten me please of the differences? I can't see how there could be much difference... Surely the root philosophy is all the same: not disrespecting one's body with such activities.

Why be straight edge? If you don't feel like doing drugs anymore, then don't. You don't have to join a fuucking cult to do that. You don't even have to call yourself something. All you have to do is NOT DO DRUGS! I get so tired of people joining shit because of what they do or don't do. I don't eat sushi so I'm going to dress all in green, write squigly lines all over myself, and call myself ragged line. It's a way of life, man. It's a way of life.

Being straight edge is a personal achievement for me, and I'm proud of the status and the label because I worked to earn it. It's exactly the same as climbing a mountain, many people don't see the point in it, and the only person who truely understands it is the climber himself. It's a personal voyage, even though it seems fashionable and popularised, it's still a personal voyage.

I still agree with meat. I know it's definately a required part of the human diet, humans benefit so much from it that it would be crazy to not notice that it's obviously something we're intended to eat. But the fact is, I've always found myself slightly, no, very freaked out at the idea of eating dead flesh, and that what I'm eating was once part of a living, moving, breathing animal. I also never really realised what I was doing, and I know this because on the few times that I've properly reminded myself that I'm eating an animal, I've been too disgusted to actually eat the rest of the meat. I'm so sure that if I realised it the rest of the time I just wouldn't be able to eat meat at all.

For some strange reason I'm okay about fish and chicken, they don't freak me out as much... chicken I eat only rarely, very rarely... fish more often. For instance tuna and salmon.

Mad

I really hate those people, too. They piss me off to no end. I get that everyday at school. My "friends" try and "help" me "tidy up my clothes" or "style my hair". Sometimes they even insist on doing my goddamn makeup.

You know what? I like my clothes black and shapeless, I like my hair messy, and I damn well like my black lipstick. I told them to fuck off and go overdose.

I can't understand why people you call your friends would start shoving their opinions down your throat. If someone wants to dress how they want, let them. Don't these people have anything to do with their lives than act as the Fashion Police and bug others because they don't dress like them?

(yes, I've been angry lately)

Well, do agree with freedom of fashion choice, but some people just have no sense at all. This fat stupud girl in my grade wants to go for the gothy look, so she wears tight biker jacket, and everything else black. I think ever since she went "wiccan" she's been in this helpless heap of ugliness, and she's not even real wiccan, she says a pentegram is a "satan star."

The root philosophy is the same, but the rest is different. "Straight Edge" has a whole seperate clothing style that goes with it in the US, but in the UK it doesn't have that, it's usually just adopted by the emo kids. Basically in the UK it's just another part of emo.

Scene kids hate straight edgers because they believe that getting absolutely shitfaced is the only way to have a really good time, and therefore think that straight edgers are boring because they refuse to do this. They also tend to think that the only reason people go straight edge is because they want to feel like they are superior to everyone else - they consider this arrogance but personally I think they're more worried about the competition.

I agree with your little emo friends. Straight Edge is boring. Intelectually. So is being emo. So is being goth. So is being punk. And preppy. And jock. And prog. And every other stupid, dipshit label you can think of. Don't these people find it tedious being such enormous asses? You know what I am? I'm a human being. Maybe. I'm not sure that I even want to commit to that. Do people hear themselves when they speak? For instance, Ann Neely just wrote that someone doesn't understand what it means to be a goth. Do you really want to know what it means to be a goth? Jack shit. That's what it means. You get a bunch of morons togethor, you dress them all in black, you give them oversized pentagram "bling", and then you play some obnoxious techno. Yippee! It's a cocksucking goth party. And what does this all amount to? I think you can guess. Of course they will tell you that it's an alternative life style in which they shove al of our monetary and physical preoccupations in our face, blah, blah, bullshiit, bullshiit. They act like this because they think it's cool. Next time you have a goth tell you that they are a nonconformist, watch very closely and you should see a small trickle of feces drip from their ridiculous, black colored lips.

OANST calm down... So now we are only allowed to be "normal"?? Do you know every goths, emo or whatever since you know they are all stupid and boring?? You're labeling a very large part of the society, and i really disagree with you. Maybe some goths are goths because they think it's and stuff, but some goths are goths because they believe in what it stands for. I have a ex-goth friend, and she's not boring, stupid or anything. She pretty much has alot of life experience.

She is intelectually boring. Anyone willing to join a click is extremely boring to me. You insinuate that I think that everyone ought to be normal. Quite the contrary. Being a goth is extremely normal. If you join a click then you do so to fit in. In other words- to find some sense of normalcy. That is what irritates me. There is no such thing as normal unless you strive to have attributes that another person has. When you start doing that, that is when you become normal.

There is no such thing as normal. Normal is diffrent for every individiual person.
Everyone is diffrent in someway, and sure some join a certain lifestyle to fit in. But just as many are in it because they actualy believe in it. Thats the same with every lifestyle out there.

And who are you to say she's intellectually boring?? Who says she's intellectual at all??
There's no such thing as normal, and maybe she joins a click(sp?) to fit in, but that's because the other poeple share the same point of view on things as her... Technically you joined a click too... The click of being "normal" or not having joined any other "click" or whatever... It's the same with people that play chess, and joins a group of other peeps who likes chess because they think it's fun.

No. It isn't. For one thing people who play in chess clubs don't go around calling themselves chessers. And if you think that not affiliating myself with any dumbass group of unrightfully angry children in adult clothing makes me "normal" then this conversation is moot. Because you aren't smart enough to talk to. If you can't just be, if you need to be something, then do it. There isn't anything wrong with it. I'll just think you're retarded. That's my perogative. You see, I'm a dickie. We're a group of people on the fringes of society who smoke banana peels and make fun of people join cults. So get in line. My fellow dickie's told me you shouldn't talk to me this way. They told me that as a dickie I am special. Hold on a second. I have to throw up on my own bulls hit.

Well congrats on being a dickie... Besides i can't change your opinion so I'm not gonna try. I haven't got in mind jopining anything anyways. I just know some "click"-members in real, and then i have the right to say you're wrong. Maybe the idea of joining something just to fit in is stupid, yea i think that too. But you can't say that ALL of them are stupid and boring... Try getting to know them, and then babbel on about how stupid they are. If you already know some, then too bad for them. I don't wanna argue with you, since i think you're an alright guy, but i was just trying to state something here.

I actually agree with you on all of your points, but on a lesser degree of harshness. Cliques and categories are stupid and fickle, mostly composed of those who found the unnamed clique or category to be cool at the time (those are the ones who identify themselves as being Goth, Emo, etc.). They all change, and they all go out of style, and everyone grows out of them. It's not a way of life, it's a way of temporary shelter for not fitting in.

Except hippies. That's a way of life.

Lol @ the hippie remark...

Well, i think that cliques(that was the right spelling X_x) are stupid... But not the people joining them... I mean, you're right about the temporary shelter thingie, but you can't label the people joining them stupid... I mean they all have their good and bad sides. They label themselves to fit in, but as Kimon says, they'll grow out of it... Well, we could just call it "temporary stupidness"?? Nah.. Some of them are stupid and some of them are not, bt it's because of them joining cliques or anything... maybe it's just a desperate way to fit in, maybe they do it because they think it's fun, or maybe they do it because they want to be cool. But who cares anyway?

I... I finally see why Luke likes you so much. You are my hero of the day even if I don't know if I agree with all that. I certainly understand the perspective though: Labels basically mean nothing.

Actually, that doesn't really sound much different than the American version. The only people I've ever met who call themselves straight edge wore the common emo attire. I don't really know of any clothing styles here that are only for straight edge kids. (I think I'd pick up on it if there was, but in all honesty, I'm so unobservant of these things that I may be overlooking it.) Are you sure there's a separate clothing style here? Heh, don't worry if you don't know. I'm just curious for no apparent reason.

Occasionaly I have moments of lucidity and say something that isn't entirely spammy. I'm going to have to work on that.

There is no such thing as normal. Normal is diffrent for every individiual person.
Everyone is diffrent in someway, and sure some join a certain lifestyle to fit in. But just as many are in it because they actualy believe in it. Thats the same with every lifestyle out there.
i completely agree, "Normal" is what you make of it, either that or go by how most other people dress.

Hahaha.

I love how much the term "emo" is tossed around now. It's become an umbrella term for an entire fashion persona.

Yes indeed.

Uh yeah, that's because it's a popular subculture, so naturally you're gonna hear about it a lot. Does this present a problem for you or were you being serious when you said you "love" it?

No shit. That's generally what happens in a subculture that involves clothing.

Wow Mac, truely a triumphant return.

I mean, I'm emo yeah, I have the hair, the pink clothes, the girls hoodies, the makeup, the fingerless gloves...
Well therein lies the problem. By prescribing to this "emo" nonsense you've welcomed the kind of harrasment that you recieved for your purchase. I'm sure your friends were merely looking out for you, as they would want you to look out for them. Perhaps if it was not your goal to be labled as "emo", their comments would not have upset you so much. You're not as innocent as you think, because I believe it was you who said that I needed a catalogue (after I had posted a picture of myself).

I care very little about what somebody else thinks of my clothing. I wear whatever I want, and I think it looks damn near terrific!

You seem to've missed the problem, and have made precisely the same point that I did, as a counter-point to my original post.

I subscribe to the emo culture, but I'm not a scene kid, which basically means, I don't HAVE to wear tight t-shirts and other such perfect stereotype emo attire constantly in order to maintain the image of a scene kid. I find myself wearing whatever I want, and I like emo because it defies normality and society, by making it acceptable to wear things that are not normally deemed acceptable. In general, I didn't like being told what to wear and what not to wear...I make those choices on my own, although they are admittedly inspired by my taste for emo.

The other person I was shopping with on that particular occasion seemed to be detirmined to imitate either Trinny or Susannah, so they were giving me their opinion on everything I picked up, which was annoying to the point that the comment about my tshirt was the straw that broke the camels back... we all know and love our emo clothes, but we don't talk about it all the time, so I had no idea why there was such a big fuss made about what I chose to wear. It was like they were deliberately playing up. That whole day was really weird, everyone was acting very strange, like they got out of bed too early or something.

As for your appearance, you look like a prep to me, and a tad bit conceited. But that's just my opinion... which doesn't affect you.

I've been seeing these straight edge shirts around, too.
Most common response to my polite way to start a conversation about the merits of it and popular music has been "Who the hell is Minor Threat?"
Edit: I don't do drugs, legal or illegal. I don't need to dress like a conformist to lead a drug free life.
